Juhl Campbell

At a very young age I knew I wanted to be an artist. I grew up on a farm in Saskatchewan, the youngest daughter of four. I was always creating something, whether with pencil and paper or fabric and needle with thread. I was very fortunate to have the freedom in childhood to let my imagination run wild.

I went to college in 1980 for Interior Design. It was there that I enjoyed the art classes, color theory and was introduced to watercolors doing architectural renderings. Later I had my own Interior Decorating business and loved to work with the color and fabrics. Working with clients and sketching out ideas was very rewarding for me. I moved to Creston in 1997 where I still have a hand in decorating but am very fortunate to be able to focus on my painting while raising my daughter, Alexandria.

I enjoy experimenting with a variety of media. When I did the historical mural of Creston I needed to paint it in acrylic, so that began my dabbling in that media. I love the intensity of the pigment in acrylics. The encaustic wax has been therapeutic for me in loosening up, for one paints with a hot iron. Again the loose vivid colors are what appeals to me. One of the mixed media I do is mounting insect specimens on my watercolor painting. (Specimens are collected after they have naturally expired.) I have a special connection to the butterfly and I receive great joy working with these amazing creatures.

I love it here in the Kootenays. The mountains, lakes and rivers in the four seasons are a source of my landscape inspiration. I love animals too so I have recently enjoyed capturing my favorite critters. I do commission work with watercolors working from photographs and my “artwares” I put my art on useful household items (see accessories or contact me). Thank you for stopping in to learn more about me and I hope if we haven't met yet we will soon.
